Privacy Policy
Last updated 14 July 2026
The short version: your recordings are converted on your own computer and are never uploaded to us. This policy explains the limited data we do handle when you use the app, buy a licence, or visit this site.
Your footage is not uploaded by the app
bvr2mp4 reads and converts your .bvr files locally on your device. Your video, audio and any personal data captured in that footage stay on your computer and are never uploaded to us. The app does connect to the internet to activate and keep your licence current (see below), but your footage is never part of that.
The web preview on this site
Our website offers an optional preview: you choose a .bvr file and your browser sends us only its first portion (32MB at most, a few seconds of footage), never the whole recording. We convert that sample and show you the watermarked result. As stated next to the upload control and in our terms:
- the sample is sent over an encrypted connection and stored securely;
- we keep it to test and improve our decoding software, including samples we could not decode;
- it is never shared with anyone else or used for any other purpose;
- if you leave your email after a failed preview, we use it once to tell you when your camera format is supported.
Do not use the preview with footage you have no right to process. To have a sample you uploaded deleted, email us from the address you'd like us to reply to with the approximate upload time.
Data we do process
- Licence & email. The app needs no account and no sign-in. When you buy a licence, your name and email are embedded in your licence key and kept in our records so we can deliver, look up and re-send your key. Legal basis: performance of our contract with you.
- Licence activation and your device. bvr2mp4 activates online and re-checks your licence with us periodically (about every seven days) to keep it valid and to revoke it if necessary. When it does, it sends your licence, a one-way hashed identifier for your computer (not its serial number, and not any file on it), and basic system details (operating system, processor type, memory, app version). We use these to run licensing and to detect licence sharing. Legal basis: performance of our contract with you, and our legitimate interest in preventing misuse.
- Usage and performance data. Each time you convert a file, the app records technical details, whether it encoded using your hardware or software, your operating system, how long the conversion took, and the file's size, framerate and resolution, and sends them to us (queued and sent later if you're offline). This helps us improve speed and reliability. It never includes your footage or anything shown in it. Legal basis: our legitimate interest in improving the product.
- Purchase information. Payments are processed by Paddle (our reseller and Merchant of Record). Paddle handles your payment details and issues your receipt; we receive confirmation of the purchase, not your card details.
- Product analytics. We use PostHog to record which steps of the app and site are used (for example: file opened, preview made, purchase) so we can improve the product. The app sends these events when an internet connection is available and queues them otherwise. Events are tied to your email only after a purchase or licence activation. Legal basis: our legitimate interest in improving the product.
- Support messages. If you email us, we keep the message to reply and provide support.
This website
This site is hosted on Cloudflare Pages. Standard server logs may be processed by our hosting provider to deliver and secure the site. We keep analytics minimal and do not sell your data.
Sharing
We only share data with the service providers named above (Paddle, PostHog, our hosting provider), each acting to deliver the service, and where required by law. We do not sell personal data.
Retention
We keep account and purchase records for as long as your licence is active and as needed for legal, tax and accounting purposes. Device activation records (the hashed identifier and system details) are kept while your licence is active, and usage and performance data is kept in aggregate to improve the product. Web-preview samples are retained to test and improve our decoding software; in-app diagnostic samples are deleted after the related issue is fixed.
Your rights
Under UK GDPR you have the right to access, correct, delete or export your personal data, to object to or restrict certain processing, and to withdraw consent where our processing relies on it, at any time. To exercise any of these, email hello@bvr2mp4.com. You also have the right to complain to the UK Information Commissioner's Office (ICO).
International transfers
Some providers (such as Paddle, PostHog and Cloudflare, which runs our website and the licensing service) may process data outside the UK. Where they do, appropriate safeguards such as standard contractual clauses are in place.
Changes
We may update this policy; the current version is the one published here with the date above.
